One may as well ask, "What is the purpose of knocking it?" You really need to ask the people concerned.

i can think of several purposes:
-it might aim to determine if it is possible to live that way, and what the advantages and disadvantages are
- it tries to determine what the costs and rewards are to change your way of live, your habits and your physical and social surroundings on a greater scale

i would be interested in their findings. (c:

I get the impression that they are travelling around Australia and helping out various charities, and interviewing interesting people along the way.

I'm pretty sure they are collecting material to be used as a book or TV series.
I don't think they are actually doing it for God, but see it more in a new agey way.(self fulfilment)
They have simplified their lifestyle to some degree by being willing to live in a motor home, a nice one at that.
And to put up with the inconveniences that go with it.

I have to agree wits Ross on that. I gave up a LOT of what I had back in Canada to come to Australia. I wouldn't even say that I was a follower of Jesus when I did it either. It is sort of a new agey thing perhaps.

Haha! It's technically not a word. Let's say: New Age-Like. Make sense? :o

Its pretty clear from their postings that they try to steer clear of any references to main stream religions, but try to quote what could be described as good philosophical advice.

from the small amount I read from there website they don't seem to be that religious and not necessarily new-agey I think that they have just realised that being tied to material things causes negative emotions and that they are seeing if living life from a different perspective is better and probably enjoying the publicity at the same time

If you are not prepared to die, for what you believe in...
then what is the point of living, for your disbelief?

I wouldn't be surprised if they ARE Christian, but are just trying to witness to the secular world. I have not read anything on their site which categorically says they are NOT religious. It's a bit like some of the media involvement we have had with freeganism. Sometimes the media doesn't want to make mention of the fact that we are Christian, probably because they think the secular audience will relate to it more.

Nevertheless, they could be new agers, or whatever. The point is that they have discovered the truth about finding happiness by having less, instead of the lie we have been sold, which is that we achieve happiness by having more.

I think it's great that people are moving in that direction. Certainly they are not the first or the only people to do so. The fact that the media is interested in their story may be an indication that at least a small part of the general public is getting sick of the whole "buy more" culture and are looking for alternatives.

They have been travelling around Australia, and seem to want to involved with as many different experiences and people from all walks of life as possible.
They are trying out busking, begging and bin raiding. I think the wife went out on the streets for one week without any money, while the husband stayed home and looked after the baby.
They also try to do voluntary work for charities and others as they move around.
It may be that they will write a book or make a doco about their experiences. They said they wanted to "interview" me about my lifestyle.
I said fine, but asked them what the will happen to the interview afterwards. They did not write back to me after that, so I think they are trying to hide what they are going to do later with all their experiences and the people they meet.
It may be that it will make people more cynical if they think they are just doing all this so they can write a book.
